The Porsche Cayenne goes back to Wendelin Wiedeking. In retrospect, it was a very courageous decision for a sports car manufacturer to also offer an SUV. But in the end, Porsche has once again shown a keen sense for trends and developments. When we think of Porsche, we think first and foremost of the Porsche 911, but the most sold Porsche is the Cayenne. Competition has come from the same family - the Porsche Macan is about to overtake the Cayenne as the best-seller.
Change is a key factor for Porsche.
Changes are always a horror for die-hard Porsche fans. When the Porsche Cayenne appeared, however, these "cast-iron" fans really went on the barricades. But Porsche set a trend with the Cayenne, led the brand to even more success and was able to tap into a completely new target group.
It is the first Porsche to offer space for five people. And not just a little, but a lot. There is enough space in the large boot for family holidays. And even though it is an SUV, Porsche has been able to preserve the sporty characteristics of the brand in the Cayenne. The Cayenne is the Porsche among SUVs.
The Porsche Cayenne is now in its third generation. The first generation, also known as the Type 955, now has official classic status at Porsche. This means an assured supply of spare parts, so that these models can also continue to be maintained and preserved.
Until a few years ago, you could buy a first-generation Porsche Cayenne for very little money. In the meantime, this generation is also enjoying more and more fans. The market is separating the wheat from the chaff, and for good examples you have to put more and more money on the table.
There are three petrol-engined variants to choose from. A basic Cayenne with a six-cylinder engine, a Cayenne S with an eight-cylinder engine and a Cayenne Turbo with a turbocharged eight-cylinder engine. On the base Cayenne, you could actually choose between a manual and automatic transmission, but on the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo, only the "Tiptronic S" automatic is available.
In 2007, the first Cayenne underwent a facelift. The internal designation is 957, and all engine variants are available exclusively with the automatic. An eagerly awaited diesel variant appears in 2009. The diesel engine becomes the best-seller in the Cayenne. It brings with it the familiar advantages: high torque with very moderate consumption.
A new variant is created with the Cayenne GTS. The GTS is characterised by special sporty accents in its appearance and driving dynamics. The eight-cylinder engine is installed.
In 2010, the Cayenne is extensively revised and the second generation is launched. The internal type designation is 958. Although the exterior dimensions have increased, the second generation appears significantly more filigree. Much has also changed in the interior. For example, the sloping centre console, which can still be found in every current Porsche.
An important innovation in the second generation: the Cayenne S Hybrid. A six-cylinder engine with turbocharging is supplemented by an electric motor. Thanks to a rechargeable battery, the Cayenne Hybrid can also be driven purely electrically over a short distance. The advantages are clear in city driving, when energy can be fed back into the battery during stop and go. And when starting up, the electric motor takes over.
In 2015, the second generation was given a facelift. The facelift mainly includes visual improvements inside and out. The second generation of the Cayenne is available as a diesel, hybrid and, in the petrol variants, as the Cayenne S, Turbo and GTS.
The third generation is available as a diesel, hybrid and, in the petrol variants, as the Cayenne S, Turbo and GTS.
The third and current generation of the Porsche Cayenne has been built since 2018. The diesel is no longer available as an engine. The Cayenne S, Turbo, GTS and Hybrid are available as variants.
New is the Cayenne Coupé, which is characterised by a sharply sloping roof section to the rear. This gives the Cayenne a sportier appearance. The Cayenne Coupé is available in all engine variants.
The most sensible engine in an SUV is the diesel. This will no longer be available in the Cayenne from 2018. If you don't want to drive the current Cayenne, then the second-generation Cayenne Diesel is certainly highly recommended.
If you drive a lot in the city, you should buy the diesel.
For those who drive a lot in city traffic, the Cayenne Hybrid is certainly an interesting choice. The hybrid has been available since the second generation. Through recuperation during braking, consumption can be drastically reduced. But the hybrid is also interesting for performance reasons. When starting off, the electric motor directly unleashes its power. For support, however, it can also be switched to the internal combustion engine.
For those who want a Cayenne, the hybrid is the ideal choice.
Whoever wants to buy a Cayenne of the current generation and also has long distances in his driving profile, should consider the Cayenne S. And of course - if you're looking for plenty of power, there's no getting around the Cayenne Turbo. The compromise between the Cayenne S and the Turbo is the Cayenne GTS.
The prices of the Porsche Cayenne are relatively stable when comparing similar models from other manufacturers. However, you cannot expect a price development like that of the Porsche 911. This means that older models are sometimes more expensive than younger ones. However, it can also be said that the Porsche Cayenne models age very well. This means that older models also have their appeal. This has a positive effect on the price.
